I started reading Latin America Since Independence by Thomas C. Wright and Robert L. Smale (2022) as a regular read and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the pressure of time hit “real” and I had to start skimming.

Who do I recommend this for? Advanced HS to adult learners. Its formatting is sensible and makes the HEAVY content readable. You should tackle it (late learner, I’m talking to you) like you would serious content for conversation later. For me, don’t knock the pen and paper. You are in fact a fully grown person studying.

As a personal nudge: also, simply know it’s not a replacement for real conversation and action that is about securing and maintaining those important, sovereign places. However, it is a good start for those reconnecting to roots they didn’t have time to study for. Don’t fall for it’s too late. Enjoy quality graphic novels if needed. They take a bit of searching here in the States but they’re out there. Good luck.
